On to DVCHC Finals

Posted by Stockton University ICE HOCKEY on Feb 16 2015 at 08:29AM PST

The Ice Hockey team won both games in a cold, snowy weekend in Aston PA in the DVCHC league playoffs. The weekend began with a hard fought 6-4 win over the Blue Hens of Delaware. Nick LaGrua benefited from increased playing time and scored twice and his brother John also scored on a shot from the blueline to lead the Ospreys. The Ospreys jumped to an early 1st period 3-0 lead before holding off the valiant effort on the underdog team from Delaware.

Sunday’s game brought about the 3rd meeting of the season with perennial league foe Alvernia. The Crusaders, from the school in Reading PA have been a thorn in the side for Stockton the past few years including 2 losses this season. There was some hope, as Stockton’s most recent game against Alvernia just 2 weeks earlier was super competitive, with an 8-6 final that included an open net goal. The teams came out hard in this game and Stockton emerged from the first with a 2-1 advantage thanks to the stellar scoring of Jimmy Massaro. The game remained with no more goals scored in the 2nd and for most of the 3rd due to fantastic goaltending on both sides, especially by Stockton netminder Eddie Rafferty, who stopped over 40 Crusader shots. A late empty net goal by Massaro sealed the game for the Ospreys. The DVCHC championship game is on February 28 against regular season champion Bryn Athyn.

Stockton’s next game is in ACHA regionals facing – who else, Alvernia. Stockton beat Alvernia in regionals in 2012 en route to the school’s only trip to ACHA nationals. Can history repeat?
